How do I reshape a large area rug?

August 30, 2010 under Large Area Rugs

I have a very large area rug (almost room size), the tag on the underside says Monalisa and that it was made in Turkey. We had a dog that urinated on the rug in several places and now the rug has ripples in it. How do I get it shaped back to normal? I’ve cleaned it with my steam cleaner before and never had a problem but it also doesn’t make it go back into the correct shape. The rug doesn’t have an odor but I keep catching my toe in the edges where it’s gotten mishapen. Any suggestions?

Sounds like you need to have your rug blocked. Blocking is a process where a rug is wet down, carefully stretched and then nailed/stapled to a board. After a few days, it is flat or at least better than it was. You have to be careful when doing this to not tear the foundation of the rug. I would recommend a pro for this, but you may be able to do it yourself if you’re adventurous. If you’re in the DC-metro area, look us up. We can help! All the best.
